When it comes to bak­ing, my forte is to­wards the end of the pro­duc­tion chain. I am happy to sam­ple most cakes, bis­cuits or desserts that are of­fered to me. I al­ways en­joy home bak­ing and it helps hav­ing a wife who is an ex­cel­lent baker. But I think my ad­mi­ra­tion for peo­ple with such tal­ents, stems back to my child­hood. My mum would do her best to steer me in the right di­rec­tion in the kitchen but I would best sum up my ef­forts as “cre­ative”. My dad would al­ways po­litely ex­press his grat­i­tude for what­ever I turned out but I never re­call him go­ing back for sec­onds. So TV Guide writer Sarah Nealon de­serves plenty of praise for putting her rep­u­ta­tion on the line for the sake of a bak­ing story (see page 12). Un­der the guid­ance of Sue Fleis­chl, Sarah made a lemon syrup cake. It was de­li­cious (and was well worth go­ing back for a sec­ond slice). [email protected]
