Pokemon The Movie: I Choose You! TVNZ 2, 8.15am

Voice Unso Ishizuka. A youngster reaches the age when he can become a Pokemon trainer. Not reviewed.

The Little Vampire TVNZ 2, 10.30am

Comedy horror – for kids – about a lonely boy who makes friends with a young vampire. Not reviewed.

A Troll In Central Park M ori TV, 2pm (See Saturday)

Zootopia TVNZ 2, 7pm

Voices Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman. Rightly regarded as one of the best animated films of all time, Zootopia centres on Judy Hoppes, a rabbit who becomes a police officer in a world of anthropomorphic mammals. ★★★★★

Tomb Raider Sky Premiere, 8.30pm Starring Alicia Vikander, Daniel Wu. As a game, Tomb Raider is a relic nowadays, which makes this reboot somewhat less relevant as its appeal would largely be to those who’ve swung through ruins as Lara Croft. Vikander is fine, but Jolie somehow fitted the role better. ★★

The Bourne Identity Three, 8.30pm Starring Matt Damon. This fast-paced retro spy thriller is based on author and ex-US Marine Robert Ludlum’s 1980 novel about a brainwashed CIA hitman who loses his memory while carrying out a covert assassination mission. ★★★★

The Ghost Writer Choice, 8.30pm Starring Ewan McGregor, Pierce Brosnan. Director Roman Polanski messes with our heads by taking modern history and offering an explanation for it all in this tense mystery thriller which stars Ewan McGregor as a ghost writer hired to edit a former British Prime Minister’s memoirs. Polanski co-wrote the superbly provocative script and handles it with even more aplomb on screen. ★★★★

Changeling M ori TV, 8.30pm Starring Angelina Jolie, John Malkovich. Director Clint Eastwood brings the same tautness and austere values of his previous hit Gran Torino to this story of a single mother whose son goes missing in 1920s LA. ★★★★

Into The Blue Bravo, 8.30pm Starring Paul Walker, Jessica Alba. Treasure hunting in the sea around Barbados, the leads get more than they bargained for when they discover not only a shipwreck full of gold, but a sunken plane loaded with cocaine on the ocean floor. ★★

Suicide Squad TVNZ 2, 9pm

Starring Margot Robbie, Will Smith. What could have been a dark, gritty and wickedly funny superhero/villain movie is instead a muddled mess. Margot Robbie tries hard as the quirky and perky Harley Quinn, but it’s not enough to save a film lacking in ideas. ★

Queen Of The Desert Choice, 10.30pm Starring Nicole Kidman. Gertrude Bell (Kidman) was a pioneering archaeologist, writer, photographer and mountaineer who trailblazed women’s rights during her extensive travels and work in the Middle East in the early 1900s. Her real-life story deserves a better vehicle than this rather tame effort. ★★

Carrie TVNZ 2, 12.10am (Sunday)

Starring Chloe Grace Moretz, Julianne Moore. The original is a horror classic, and while this well-acted “reimagining” of Stephen King’s tale makes for a decent contemporary update, it will always suffer by comparison. ★★★
