Gnomeo & Juliet TVNZ 2, 7am

Voices James McAvoy, Emily Blunt. This serviceable animated comedy about two warring garden gnome clans is a clever take on the immortal bard’s classic tale. ★★★

On Paper Three, noon Starring Lindsay Hartley. A woman takes a job with an author that requires her to date men for his book. Not reviewed.

Superman Returns TVNZ 2, 12.05pm

Starring Kevin Spacey, Brandon Routh. Routh dons the bright red cape for this Superman reboot that seems to tick all the boxes but somehow fails to entertain as effectively as the Christopher Reeve original. ★★★

My Daughter Is Missing Three, 1.55pm Starring Miranda Raison. A cyber-security expert’s daughter is kidnapped. Not reviewed.

Dr Seuss’ Horton Hears A Who! Three, 4.15pm Voices Jim Carrey, Steve Carell. Clever use of computer animation and witty dialogue bring this Dr Seuss classic to charming life. ★★★★

The Karate Kid Part II Three, 7pm Starring Ralph Macchio, Pat Morita. This attempt to recycle the original film’s material is competent but is obviously by-the-numbers. ★★★

Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom TVNZ 2, 7.30pm

Starring Harrison Ford, Kate Capshaw. Director Steven Spielberg tosses a touch more gratuitous gore into this Indiana Jones sequel, but it’s still a superb piece of escapist entertainment. The effects were way ahead of its time in 1984, but its dark tones upset many fans of the first movie, Raiders Of The Lost Ark. ★★★★ The Foreigner Sky Premiere, 8.30pm Starring Jackie Chan, Pierce Brosnan. Chan shows his acting chops in this action drama about a man seeking revenge for the politically motivated death of his daughter. But while it’s a more sensitive Chan, the kung fu master shows he has lost none of his eye-popping martial-arts skills. ★★★

Blue Streak M ori TV, 8.30pm Starring Martin Lawrence, Luke Wilson. This action-packed crime caper about a crook who crazily poses as a cop showcases what is quite possibly one of comedian Martin Lawrence’s funniest performances. ★★★

Waiting TVNZ Duke, 8.30pm

Starring Justin Long, Anna Faris. Comedy about fast-food restaurant workers, in particular Dean (Justin Long), who decides life has more to offer. ★★

American Pie Bravo, 8.30pm Starring Jason Biggs, Chris Klein. A benchmark for the coming-of-age teen-sex comedy genre. Expect all the usual raunch and gross gags, although there are many genuinely funny moments that will either make you laugh or cringe. ★★★
