Show of hands for those in support

-

To stand and present before a camera is a skill that requires training. Overdone gestures of any description by the presenter must not be allowed to distract viewers from what is being said. I agree wholeheartedly with Murray B’s comments regarding Jessica Mutch McKay (Mr Telly, June 6-12). However, notwithstanding the hand waving, I find I am even more distracted by the dreadful habit she has of widening her eyes to the extreme every couple of sentences. As a person who has trained people in the art of presenting I am amazed that nobody on the News team has corrected her. I just have to look away and just listen when she’s on.

Hallelujah, I’m not the only one who thinks like Murray B (Hamilton East). I find the incessant, unnecessary and ridiculous flapping hands around while talking on camera by TV reporters so irritating. Why do they have to do it? The worst pair are Jessica Mutch McKay and Katie Bradford. Others, of course, are following suit, assuming it’s mandatory. With luck, some action may be taken to have it stopped. Not holding my breath, however.

Ray H (Palmerston North)

I have to agree with Murray B. He is so right about the journalists and their waving hands and Jessica Mutch McKay’s widening eyes. But the worst one in my view is Lisa Davies. When she was reporting on Pike River I had to turn her off. She couldn’t keep her hands still at all and still can’t. I think they need to hold on to something behind their backs so we can’t see their hands.
