Hosking and Henry tops for Breakfast

-

These letters are in response to an editorial by Julie Eley asking readers about the Breakfast show on TVNZ 1 and their favourite presenters. After a random draw, Peter and Carol Wood of Havelock North win the six-month subscription to TV Guide.

When Breakfast started in 1997, my wife and I watched as much as possible before we left for work at 7am. When we retired in early 1999, we used to sit up in bed with our breakfast and watch from 6am to around 7.30am. We liked Mike Hosking and Paul Henry the best as they were both straight shooters and called a spade a spade. Paul Henry had a comical laugh and was a real entertainer. When he encouraged a naive Matty McLean in 2010 to jump the fence at Premier House that was live TV at its best. Alison Pugh and Charlotte Bellis we remember as being outstanding reporters when they were on the show. All the other presenters over the years were good in their job and none put us off watching TVNZ 1 until Paul Henry started on TV3 in 2015 followed by The AM Show in 2017. Unfortunately for TVNZ 1, we have stayed with TV3’s AM show ever since.

I really enjoyed looking at the photos of the former Breakfast presenters in the TV Guide. I loved the one of Mike Hosking just sitting there looking boyish. But I must say I found it embarrassing all those years ago watching him and Kate Hawkesby flirting with each other. But I do enjoy him these days. And I love the voice of Paul Henry. He has a special way of speaking like he’s got a mouth full of water and it intrigues me. I also enjoyed Judy Bailey reading the news.
