The four-yearly burst of excitement for rugby is now over with the end of the
Rugby World Cup and the outstanding efforts of the All Blacks to make the final.
But what happens now? Is it just another four years of a regular test match format until the next World Cup? A new Nations Championship is planned for 2026 but is that enough to boost the global appeal of rugby?
An idea that has been mooted is to have a world knockout competition every four years between World Cups, maybe called the Rugby World Trophy, and be played over five successive weekends in one host country.
The top-ranked 32 teams in the world would feature in the competition. A random draw would be held, so any team could end up playing any other. The losers would be immediately eliminated and the next weekend the remaining 16 teams would play again (also after a random draw, to be televised).
The next week there would be eight teams playing, then four with the final on the fifth weekend. This means every match would be meaningful. At this year’s Rugby World Cup, both New Zealand and South Africa lost matches on the way to the final. Under the Rugby World Trophy concept, both teams would have been eliminated early on.
Such a format also gives a chance for so-called minor nations to possibly thrive.
The Rugby World Trophy could be just the sort of boost global rugby needs right now.
