Taylor Swift

- With James Croot

With Australia and New Zealand in the grip of Taylor-mania, there is bound to be a certain amount of jealousy, angst and sadness among the thousands of Kiwi Swifties unable to make it across the ditch for the pop star’s Eras Tour concerts in Melbourne and Sydney.

To help take the edge off – and lift the spirits of those not lucky enough to be among the record crowds at the MCG or Accor Stadium – Stuff to Watch has compiled a guide of the best of Taylor Swift available to watch on a streaming service near you, so you can stage your own Eras Tour party at home.

Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (YouTube, iTunes and other rental services)

The reason millions of Swifties worldwide packed out cinemas in October last year. Arguably the closest thing to being at the concert itself, but offering a far better view than most of the seats at either Australian venue. It captures three of Swift’s six shows at Los Angeles’ SoFi Stadium last August, with this version featuring three additional songs that weren’t in the theatrical release – Long Live, The Archer and Wildest Dreams.

“You don’t have to be cray-cray for Tay-Tay to enjoy The Eras Tour,” wrote Empire magazine’s Ian Freer. “Taylor’s version of a concert flick might not reinvent the music movie wheel but, as a gift to the hardcore or a primer to her immense talent, it works a treat.” An even longer “Taylor’s Version” is scheduled to hit Disney+ on March 15.

Miss Americana (Netflix)

Focused on the sometimes tumultuous time period between Swift’s Reputation Stadium Tour in 2018 and the release of her seventh album Lover, the following year, Lana Wilson’s

(Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields) 2020 documentary looks at Swift’s growing acceptance of her role as not only a singer-songwriter and entertainer, but also as an influential woman “harnessing the full power of her voice”. “What takes Americana beyond a string of charming anecdotes though are the revelations that make up much of the second half,” wrote Entertainment Weekly’s Leah Greenblatt.

The 1989 World Tour Live (YouTube)

Originally made for Apple Music, this 2015 concert movie was filmed at what was, before this year, her biggest concert on Australian soil. Almost 76,000 fans packed into Sydney’s then ANZ (now Accor) Stadium for what Sydney Morning Herald’s veteran music

reviewer Bernard Zuel described as “one of the most spectacular stadium shows I have seen”. Mixed in among the songs are behind-the-scenes, rehearsal and special guest footage from throughout the six-month tour.

Amsterdam (Disney+)

Swift has a small, but pivotal role in David O. Russell’s 1930s-set 2022 dramedy about three friends who witness a murder, are framed for it and then uncover one of the most outrageous plots in American history. A complex, character-driven

conspiracy tale that’s full of twists and turns, memorable moments and more than one message that should resonate with modern-day audiences, it features a stunning acting ensemble that includes Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, John David Washington, Rami Malek and Robert De Niro.

New Girl (Disney+)

Swift plays the eponymous character in this hit noughties sitcom’s second-season finale – Elaine’s Big Day. What was supposed to be a celebration of the marriage of Cece and Shivrang unfolds into chaos, culminating in a surprise declaration of love from someone else. “I just lie awake, and I just write in my journal, and I paint pictures of you on my easel... Will you take me away from this madness? And you are not too short for me, I don’t care what your mother says. Let’s go to Vegas and elope.”
