Driven to distraction by road cones

-

These letters are in response to an editorial by Julie Eley asking readers for their thoughts about road cones. After a random draw, Gwen and Bruce win the six-month subscription to TV Guide.

We were doing a road trip from Dunedin up to Wh ngarei. Overnighted at a B&B just south of Taup . While on the road between Taup and Tokoroa, we stopped for road works. When we proceeded the road cones seemed like they went for about a kilometre. We had not long been past the roadworks and road cones when we had a phone call from the people at the B&B. We had left a bag behind, so we turned round and went through the whole procedure again heading south. Collected the bag, turned around and proceeded past the road cones all over again. To this day, we still remember and laugh about it. Gwen and Bruce (Dunedin)

Forget about the great mountains and beautiful Lake Wakatipu. Queenstown has another attraction. A maze. On the way into town, you will come across rows and rows of orange cones. I feel so sorry for our visitors who have to negotiate the diversions to nd their hotels or motels. I feel this sea of orange cones must be the most in one place − even more than the Hawke’s Bay, Julie Eley. A blot on the landscape that has been around for weeks, months and much more. Jay Vee Dee (Queenstown)

This is a true story about road cones. While vacuuming under my teenager’s bed a few years ago I found an obstruction. Upon investigation I found, to my surprise, a road cone. Needless to say my family had some explaining to do when they arrived home from school that day. Beverley Kay-Donner (Mosgiel)
