Rembuden Karate makes the grade
Upper Hutt Rembuden Karate is celebrating the grading success of several club members.
Nine athletes from the martial arts club achieved a new grading including seven awarded their First Dan and the rank of Shodan. a first degree black belt. Another two achieved Second Dan.
The national grading for the mix of teenagers and adults was the end result of several years training to get to this level.
Tim Gordon, Marie Weavers, Hector Nikora, Donna Baguley, Stefan Goeres, Paul Georgantas and Liam Jillett achieved the First Dam and Jen Tyson and Edward Maunsell the Second Dan.
The 21⁄ hour grading was taken by Dennis May, a 9th dan from Auckland. it was held in Lower Hutt alongside two other Hutt Valley karate clubs.
The Upper Hutt club has operated for 25 years.
It holds meetings three times at week and offers instruction in traditional Okinawan Goju-Ryu Karate.
Goju-Ryu is a traditional karate style because it traces its lineage to the founder, Chojun Miyagi Sense.
It is dedicated to preserving the art in its original form Upper Hutt Valley Indoor Bowls is on top of its game with another winning season on the go.
FIve local clubs are affiliated to the UHVIB Association: St Catherine’s, Stokes Valley Presbyterian, Upper Hutt School, Brentwood Indoor Bowls, and the Upper Hutt Cosmopolitan Club.
Upper Hutt Valley teams played in the regional Patterson Trophy and earned the right to play in the Welch Trophy against five other zones from around New Zealand earlier this month.
The UHVIB representatives were [Team 1]: Ashley Diamond (skip), Lisa White, Sheree Holmes and Robert Fuge and [Team 2] Brandon Fuge (skip), Blake Signal, Hamish Duncan and Lisa Gould. Earlier this season Gould and Holmes were selected in the North v South Island Tournament.
Upper Hutt Valley also won the New Zealand Mixed Fours and Mixed Pairs in 2016 with the fours going through thier seven round competition unbeaten.
The fours team was Diamond (skip), Brandon Fuge, White and Holmes with Diamond and Holmes backing up for the pairs.
