More time for nominations

- NICHOLAS BOYACK

Nominations for the Hutt Valley Sports Awards have been extended until Friday.

Awards organiser Ken Laban said the organisers are keen to get as many nominations as possible.

The awards cover both Upper and Lower Hutt, with recent winners including Nick Willis, Cathy Cross, Stephen Jenness and Jeremy Thrush.

Laban said the standard had always been high and he is confident that will be the case again this year.

There 11 categories, including a new one this year for exceptional service to sport.

Laban said that running clubs and sporting associations is becoming increasingly difficult and it is important that people that put in the hard yards get recognition.

The awards also have a legends category, which last year went to former All Black and Petone legend Andy Leslie.

Previous winners include Trish Hina (who represented New Zealand in four sports) cricket great John Reid and softballer Naomi Shaw..
