Upper Hutt Leader - - FRONT PAGE -

It is a shame to see rugby league in the Hutt Valley struggling. Clubs like Randwick, Petone, Upper Hutt and Wainuiomata have a proud tradition.

Nationally they have produced numerous Kiwis and been at the heart of a vibrant club scene in Wellington. Who can forget the mighty Wainuiomata side that did so well at a national level, featuring Ken Laban?

In recent years the competition has been in rapid decline with numbers decreasing and the standard increasingly poor.

It is clear that New Zealand Rugby League needs to do a lot more to support the code in Wellington.

It would be alarming to see Laban’s prediction - that the game will not exist in five years time - come true.

Sadly, what is happening with league is also happening with other sports. All codes are finding it difficult to find players, volunteers and cash.

Hopefully league will rise from the ashes and we will once again see the mighty Randwick Kingfishers take on the Upper Hutt Tigers in front of a big crowd at the Hutt Rec.
