Hauraki Plains College won Showquest at Claudelands Arena in Hamilton last Saturday in the sixth regional event of New Zealand’s new music, dance and drama showcase for schools.

Local teens captured the spirit of the event in themes important to them.

The winning team performed Coming Out, supporting the LGBTQ community.

Student co-captain Breanna Baker said that it was important to the team to use the platform to promote a message.

“When we were planning our theme for Showquest, we sat down and asked ourselves what was going on in society, and what was a message we could put out that would have a big impact,” she said.

Teams were judged overall on their performance, soundtrack, costuming, choreography and theme.

The college alsowon the Choreography Award along with Te Kuiti Primary School.

Showquest is being staged in Northland, Christchurch, Nelson, Wellington, Hawke’s Bay, Bay of Plenty, Waikato and Auckland. A national online final will name the top entry nationwide next month.
