Art on show at Waikino

-

Waikino’s historic Victoria Hall will be filled with hundreds of artworks this Labour Weekend.

The annual event will have art in five categories — from painting, craft, photography (people and other) and outdoor sculpture, to be on display at The Falls Retreat by the Owharoa Falls.

To commemorate the centennial of Armistice Day which marks the end of World War I, a special category has been created this year with art related to this theme.

Art convenor Helen Wilson says there have been some interesting exhibits already entered in this category.

The winner of the supreme award sponsored by Waihi Oceana Gold will receive a cash prize of $500.

“ARTWaikino is the largest art exhibition in the Hauraki district and is always well supported by sponsors, the public and the artists,” Helen says.

The event is organised by volunteers with the proceeds going towards the upkeep of the community hall, which needs a new roof.

The winners will be announced tomorrow during a wine and cheese evening, and visitors are encouraged to come and meet with the artists and judges.

The exhibition is open from Saturday October 20 to Monday October 22 from 10am to 4pm and all the artwork will be for sale.

Helen says it is a good opportunity to buy original art to add to a collection or enhance the de´cor of a home or an office.

She encouraged visitors to also do some sightseeing while in the area during Labour Weekend.

“Why not cycle the Hauraki Rail Trail, take a train ride, visit the Victoria Battery Site and learn about the gold mining history of the area or just learn the village’s story through enjoying the art wall located beside the Ohinemuri River,” she says.
