Learn mindfulness meditation

- By MELANIE CAMOIN news@waihileader.co.nz

A five-week class to learn mindfulness meditation will start at the end of the month in Waihi.

The Wednesday classes will be taught by natural energy healing practitioner Kathryn Norton-Taylor from her Waihi clinic.

“Mindfulness” has been used — and overused — lately in the media but Kath says that the practice of mindfulness takes its roots in Buddhism, but does not necessary need to have religious undertones during practice.

She says mindfulness helps people live more fully in the present in a less reactive way.

“Practice allows us to contact a deeper, stiller, quieter part of our true nature bringing a sense of coming home to ourselves.”

The five-week course she offered previously brought many newbies as well as others who wanted to deepen their practice.

“The sessions guided and focused on the body connection to the mind, and being grounded. You do not lay down the floor, we sit on chairs,”

“Meditation creates clarity in our mind and helps us create a space for us to understand that we are not our thoughts.”

Although Kate does not claim meditation cures any diseases, she says it is beneficial to people suffering from overwhelming feelings like stress, anxiety or anger or just people willing to ‘pause’ in their life.

“We live such busy lives and being able to pause just 10 minutes a day while meditating can be truly life changing.”

Kate’s life changed 35 years ago when she attended a meditation retreat in Bethells Beach.

Since then she has attended many more, including the 10-day silent (Vipassana) meditation seven times and was part of the Perth Meditation Centre, a practical teaching and learning centre, free of any spiritual beliefs.

A former yoga teacher, Kate set up her clinic in Waihi a few years ago where she provides Aquarian energy healing therapy and reiki to people.

She has been holding regular monthly meditation locally too.

Meditation, she says, is just one way to help “checking in with yourself”
