Waihi College hosted this year’s International Students Surf Day competition on Monday at Waihi Beach.

In conjunction with Aidan Comrie of Learn to Surf, the day was a huge success. Apart from the odd cloud the weather was perfect and the waves were pumping. Students entered from Waihi, Katikati, Te Puke and Tauranga Boys Colleges, as well as students from Bethlehem College to take part in the Learn to Surf lessons. These students came from further afield — Germany, France and Japan — and all the students loved the beach life that New Zealand has to offer.

There were several heats throughout the day and some great surfing on display. Some of the kids had never surfed before coming to New Zealand but have been making the most of the beaches and taking lessons over the last few months. Taking out the winning female spot was Oceane Robert (of France) from Waihi College and top male was Constantin Sieve (of Germany), also from Waihi College.
