Civic awards to be presented to Hamilton's finest

Educators, arts identities, two couples and governance specialists are among the recipients of the 2016 Hamilton City Council Civic Awards.

Well-known city identities Dr Bev Gatenby and David Lloyd, along with Selwyn Cook and Keith Tanner are being recognised.

Joining them on the 2016 list are Geoff and Jill McMillan, honoured for their work in prisoner rehabilitation, andWalter and Tiare Tuakana who are recognised for their service to the Cook Islands community.

The Civic Awards are an annual fixture in the Hamilton City Council calendar, celebrating the contributions to Hamilton made by the city's residents.

Recipients are nominated by members of the community, with nominations assessed by the Council.

The awards will be presented in a formal event on December 9 in the Council Chamber.

Mayor Andrew King says the awards are an important way to recognise the contribution of Hamiltonians to the city.

“One of my personal values is always to say thank you to people who have worked tirelessly to improve things. In this case, the Civic Awards really showcase the amazing people who have made a difference.

“All the Civic Award nominees are committed to Hamilton and have given up their own time, investing countless hours to support the arts, the community, education or people and wellbeing. More crucially, they've done that over the course of several years.

“Thank you to each and every one of them and to all the other people we haven't recognised as part of the Civic Awards for what they do to make our city as wonderful as it is.” This year’s recipients are: Nancy Caiger— services to the arts and community. Gerri Pomeroy— services to people and wellbeing. Dr Assil Russell— services to people and wellbeing. Keith Tanner— services to the community and local government. Walter and Tiare Tuakana— services to the community.
