-

Eight Waikato groups have been given donations totalling $16,097 as part of the Mazda Foundation’s latest funding round.

A range of arts, education and environmental projects have benefited, including Hamilton North School which cares for students with special needs.

Three environmental projects in the Waikato also benefited, including the Mangaiti Gully Restoration Trust, which received $4200 for pest eradication.

“Eradicating rats is a crucial part of our aim to achieve a healthy population of indigenous biodiversity,” says Rex Bushell, trustee and restoration coordinator.

The Maungataurari Ecological Island Trust received $2941.50 to buy chainsaw equipment for its tree maintenance programme at Sanctuary Mountain and the Waikato River Trails Trust received $2420 for heavy duty gardening equipment to clear areas covered in weeds for replanting.

Amateur dramatic society Cambridge Repertory Society Incorporated received $636.65 to buy smoke machines and the children at Central Kids Ngatea Kindergarten can continue to explore and learn in nature during the winter months, after receiving $590 to buy wet weather gear.

Almost $118,000 was donated to 40 recipients across New Zealand this round — making it the foundation’s largest funding round to date.

Each year the Mazda Foundation hosts three funding rounds to help Kiwis in need, having gifted over $3 million to the community.

Managing director of Mazda New Zealand and chairman of the Mazda Foundation, David Hodge, says Mazda is proud of its continuous support of Kiwis, communities and charities across the country.

“There are thousands of incredible causes across New Zealand, and we’re proud of the work the Mazda Foundation does to support some of the caring Kiwis that are doing commendable work for our environment, our community and people in need.”
