Lakeside intrigue blends nature with aesthetic design

- By Jo Ferris

Anyone familiar with the design approach of Hamilton’s Paua Architects, will appreciate this home’s aesthetics and its connection with this setting by Lake Rotokauri.

Their focus on sustainable architecture embodies natural elements to present an intriguing home that blends industrial hints with interesting lines and angles in its contemporary approach. Not afraid to flirt with bold colour, rooms also pay homage to traditional character as well. It is a clever combination - one which personalises this home and offers individuality throughout.

Soaring two levels, the main focus embraces the family hub. Rising the full height of the home, this vaulted section connects both levels with a mezzanine gallery. The clever design of a bookcase balustrade links bedrooms and large rumpus room upstairs. Looking down below, family connection is an integral element.

Full-height glazing gazes out to the lake and theatrical draping instils a sense of drama come nightfall when snuggling up around the fire. This is also a major feature of the home. The 3-D effect of the panelled wall enclosing the wood fire is striking. The look is repeated in the formal lounge and dining area next door – just on a much lesser degree. This room is softer, a single-room height ceiling, carpeted flooring and draping changing its mood completely.

Each area gives ample space for distinct dining settings that are complemented by sofa lounge settings around the fire. It’s ballroom space in each zone – another aspect that caters to individual taste. Kitchen design is also intriguing – its angled, corner approach keeps practical workplaces out of the main view, yet in touch at the same time. An open pantry is also cleverly masked from view.

Ply plays an important role throughout the home – either on ceilings, kitchen cabinetry and finishing elements. Blended with concrete block features, cork and carpet flooring, plus colourful accents, these facets all highlight the architect’s bespoke approach.

This is a significant home – six bedrooms, three bathrooms and three living areas. The house is shredded in natural light and every room has its own uninterrupted view to the lake and surrounding wetlands. It’s a short walk to the walkways and nature. But this home has its own recreation. An in-ground saltwater swimming pool is a pleasure for exercise or leisure. Outdoor settings enhance this home’s link with nature, while playground lawns allow plenty of space for cricket and footie or simply romping with the dog.

A dedicated area for veges and herbs is brilliant too, thanks to its easy-care design and raised beds.

This is an elite location – 10 minutes from The Base, around 15-minutes to Hamilton’s CBD and five minutes or so to the

Waikato Expressway – making easy commuting. More importantly, the lure of lifestyle within nature lifts this home to another level.
