House of the Year awards tend to catch the eye - particularly when the annual Registered Master Builder kudos include a gold award, capped by top praise as a winner of its category.

This Cambridge property earned those accolades in 2021 for its builder Linecrest Homes. The house was always destined to catch eyes, thanks its corner position in one of Cambridge’s newer areas. Corner sites enhance the sense of space around a home. In this case, the mix of claddings also increase this home’s street-front appeal. Vertical golden cedar contrasts with the grey tones of horizontal weatherboard, which is also off-set with accents of black vertical board.

These points of difference continue inside. Golden cedar lines a feature wall in this home’s entrance, while black vertical boarding features in the lounge. This house unveils innovative design and chic finish throughout – two essential ingredients to earn the judges’ praise in House of the Year. It’s a spacious home – four bedrooms to cater for families and friends – or that sought-after option to work from home.

Attention to detail and extra finish is lavished on the key kitchen and bathroom areas. A cook’s kitchen revolves around entertaining and family gatherings – with a scullery making life easy. Stone counters and a bar-stool island are matched with high-end appliances and extra detail. A waterfall finish on the island and a benchheight window on the cooking station add intrigue to this kitchen, while black makes an appearance again.the look is sleek and understated – complemented by light woodgrain flooring that flows through to the dining and family lounge.

Bathrooms also highlight this home’s taste for contrasting tone and texture. The black and grey colours that introduce this home’s allure on the outside are drawn into these areas as well – grey tiling on one entire wall in the main bathroom, and a dramatic black wall. Underfloor heating in both bathrooms is the added benefit in these rooms.

The black and white is a constant thread and a distinctive feature of the home.

Black is always a bold choice. Used well and not overdone, it’s an accent which adds depth and mood. Black drapes and blinds change this room’s mood entirely come nightfall. Streamed with natural light during the day as views gaze out around the neighbourhood; at night watching a movie on the TV, this room is the perfect cinema.

Sitting in a newer area of Cambridge, it’s a short stroll to the distinctive café that is Joe’s Garage. The local superette is nearby as well and this near the Waikato

Expressway, which makes the commute to the airport, Hamilton and Auckland a
