The Chiefs got off to a messy start, chalking up seven handling errors in the first 28 minutes and when Liam Messam threw a loose pass, after his powerful defence had secured a turnover, Kiwi second-five Mike Harris snatched the intercept for the Reds and started a 75-metre foot race to the try line.

He didn’t make it but he didn’t have to, with right wing Dom Shipperley on hand to take the pass and score the try.

Sonny Bill Williams was stupendous in the first spell on both attack and defence, and the Chiefs started to put some phases together but it was not until the 30th minute that they finished anything off.
