Waikato A meeting of the executive committee was held last evening, where it was resolved that members of the Soldiers’ Club Executive be members of the Red Cross Executive Committee, and that the Mayor be chairman. Proposed by Mr Valder, seconded by Mr E McGregor and carried, that all elements of gambling be eliminated from any methods to be adopted by this committee for the purpose of raising funds. A number of suggestions were put forward by different members of the committee as to the methods to be adopted in raising the money, and it was resolved that Mr Paul submit a scheme. 50 YEARS AGO As the farmer has little control over his costs he should receive taxation benefits, Sir Leslie Munro said in an interview with the Times reporter today. Former New Zealand Ambassador to the United States, Sir Leslie was last night selected as the National Party candidate for the Waipa seat at the coming general election. As soon as they ‘‘reasonably can’’ Sir Leslie and Lady Munro will take up residence in the constituency. ‘‘I recognise,’’ he said today, ‘‘the difficulties confronting the dairy industry over which the farmer has no control, and which he cannot necessarily pass abroad.’’ Staying on a marae is a first for many of the Papua New Guinea national rugby team, but the Turangawaewae marae in Ngaruawahia has united them. Members of the ‘‘Kumuls’’ league team come from four regions of Papua New Guinea with more than 700 tribes. The marae has more atmosphere with which all members of the team feel comfortable, said team spokesman George Mack. Mr Mack, the vicepresident of the PNG Rugby Football League, said the marae is close to the village environment most players come from.
