Waikato A largely-attended meeting of settlers took place on Saturday night in the Te Kowhai Farmers’ Clubroom, the gathering being promoted by the local Farmers’ Club with a view to the settlers conferring with Messrs R F Bollard and J. A Young. After welcoming the parliamentary representatives and acknowledging their interest in the district’s welfare, the chairman referred to the fact that with the advent of the dried milk industry about to be established, it behoved the settlers to see to it that they had roads able to carry the increased traffic which it will involve. 50 YEARS AGO There would be no civic sponsorship of any major undertaking during Hamilton’s centennial year because the city’s capital resources were tied up until the 1970s with works in hand and planned works, the Mayor, Dr Denis Rogers, told a meeting of the centennial committee yesterday. The council, he said, would probably mark the city’s 100th birthday by providing a large centennial mural on the wall in the foyer of the Founders Theatre. It would be up to individual clubs and organisations to plan special centennial arrangements. More and more Waikato Polytechnic students are asking for time to pay course fees’ because of hard economic times, the polytechnic council heard at its meeting yesterday. In his monthly report principal Peter Johnson said the day would come when the council would have to consider imposing a surcharge for time payment because of the slower cash flow and extra administration involved in extended payments. Several councillors expressed reservations about such a charge. Mr Johnson said the polytechnic had always allowed people to pay over time in cases of financial pressure.
