Waikato A meeting of the Waikato SubProvincial Executive was held on Friday. Mr Hammond (president) occupied the chair, there being a large attendance of delegates. A Communication was received asking the executive to nominate members in connection with the Hamilton Repatriation Committee, Messrs E H Hammond, J S Fisher and E McGregor were nominated. Mr A H Ellicott submitted a proposal to act as agent for the executive in connection with the establishment of a land agency business, and also as organiser for the union. There should be no reason why a borough or county council should not build and operate a motel at a profit for the benefit of its ratepayers, the Mayor of Morrinsville, Mr W A Rushton, said last night. He was speaking at a meeting of Morrinsville Borough Council after hearing a letter from the New Zealand Motel Federation seeking the Council’s support for opposition to possible legislation enabling councils to operate motels. The Federation said in its letter that the Supreme Court had recently ruled that the Napier City Council could not operate legally a motel built in Kennedy Park, Napier. Waikato unemployment reached new post-Depression heights last month as the national jobless total climbed nearer to the 200,000 mark. Over the Christmas-New Year holiday period the number of unemployed in the Waikato, Thames Valley and King Country rose by almost 800 to 14,403 or 12.21 per cent of the work force. This means one in eight workers in the region is now unemployed and the number of jobless has increased by 43 per cent in the past 12 months. There were also 650 unemployed students registered, which took the total jobless to 15,053 or 13.5 per cent of the workforce.
