Recycle Boutique Hamilton co-owner Favourite fashion item: Longsleeve tee from bsddln.bigcartel.com A friend of mine has just graduated design at uni and this year he decided he wanted to go into clothing. This is from his first commercial run.

We have quite a lot of small New Zealand labels that come in to the store and are not so well known, but still very reputable, and seeing him go though everything to get to this point — to have his first commercial run and do it all outside of his 9-to-5 — it’s really been an eye opener for me. It’s something I think people take for granted with a lot of those New Zealand labels, y’know? You’ve gotta start small and work your way up.

It makes you appreciate quality a lot more, like, prints that don’t fade the minute you put them through the wash, and double seams — that sort of thing. It makes you appreciate paying a bit more for something you know is going to last. We see that here as well. The more expensive labels come to us in better condition because they’re not so mass produced and are often quite well made.

The printed longsleeve has made a real comeback this year and it’s something we’ll see a bit more of. Basically, my friend has drawn his inspiration from Japanese culture, so the kanji means family, referring to the small production. The word ‘bsd’ is short for ‘based’ which is kind of a slang word for doing what you want and not caring what other people think — forging your own path, I guess. And the designer’s name is Declan, so his label dln has just taken out the letters e,c and a. It’s been cool watching him overcome the hurdles.
