Six medals for Bishop at school champs
Taupo Nui-a-Tia College pupil Johnson Bishop has been named one of two outstanding male swimmers at the national Secondary Schools Swimming Championships.
The 13-year-old won four golds at the three day meet in Wellington, as well as two silver medals.
Bishop won the 400m freestyle, 50m breaststroke, 200m individual medley and 100m breaststroke.
His silver medals came in the 200m freestyle and 200m breaststroke, both in personal best times.
In the 200m individual medley, Bishop was third until the breaststroke leg where he pushed into first place. From there he held on for the win, beating his previous best time by nearly a second.
His performance in the 100m breaststroke was 0.3 seconds behind the competition record.
After his efforts Bishop was named the joint male swimmer of the meet with 17-year-old Hamish Trlin of Wellington College.
Trlin also won four gold medals, with one silver and two bronze.
Bishop’s Taupo Nui-a-Tia College team-mate Caitlin Taylor took out the 200m butterfly in the 15-year-old age group.
