Ko still on track for title

-

Lydia Ko needed some help from those around her to break a 146-year-old golfing record at the last major championship of the year.

The Kiwi, 17, remained in a share of sixth place but had edged one shot closer to the lead after the third round of the Evian Championship in France.

After opening with a 69 and backing that up with a 68, Ko carded a one-overpar 72 at the Evian Resort course in Evian-les-Bains yesterday to be at fourunder-par for the fifth and final major of 2014.

She maintained her place on the leaderboard, but was four shots off the pace heading into the final round this morning.

She started the third round five shots behind Brittany Lincicome but the American blew out with a six-over 77 to drop from 10-under to four-under.

Instead, South Korea’s Hyo Joo Kim (72) held the third round lead at eightunder-par.

Australia’s former world No 1 and seven-time major winner Karrie Webb was second at seven-under, while South Korea’s Mi Jung Hur was third at sixunder.

Victory was still achievable for Ko but, short of shooting the lights out on the shores of Lake Geneva today, she needed the leaders to go backwards and her putter to heat up.

The world No 3 was trying to become the youngest winner of a golf major, wiping out the record held by the legendary Scot, Young Tom Morris, who as a 17-year-old won the first of his four British Opens, in 1868.
