Family interaction at Children’s Day event
Costumes, Crossfit, bouncy castles and game designing will help Waikato kids of all ages celebrate Children’s Day.
They’ll come together for a Superhero Carnival based out of Garden Place on Saturday March 7.
Kids are encouraged to dress up as their favourite hero and families can bring a picnic to the central square.
Hamilton Children and Families Trust chair Rou Toa expects to see ‘‘the good old Batman and Spiderman’’ as well as Tinkerbell and other popular characters.
The trust oversees the free event but about 15 other organisations pitched in to help make it happen.
And that means variety on the day – from a multicultural parade and performances to computer game design workshops, Crossfit stations, and stallholders with information for families.
‘‘What’s really exciting for the trust is the collaboration of all the organisations in one place,’’ Toa said.
Intermediate-age and teenage Hamiltonians should find more to entertain them this year.
There will be a gaming area and CrossFit stations.
There will be a nod to the major sporting events in the city of late with an inflatable soccer area and cricket activities.
Garden Place Library and the Waikato Museum will host activities and a special trail will lead between the two areas for the day.
‘‘Young talent’’ from local schools will get up on the stage in Garden Place and Free FM will keep the crowd entertained with music and a chalk drawing competition in Civic Square.
Facepainting will be available: ‘‘We’re actually going to provide all the face paints, the brushes . . . and we’re going to encourage parents, caregivers to paint their children’s faces,’’ Toa said.
‘‘We want to have activities that will encourage interaction with parents and children.’’
The Children’s Day Carnival is Saturday March 7, 10am-2pm in Garden Place, the library and the Waikato Museum.
