Ronchi says goodbye to the Black Caps
Luke Ronchi has retired from international cricket. The Black Caps wicketkeeper announced yesterday that his knock of 16 against against Bangladesh at the Champions Trophy on June 9 was his last for the team.
The 36-year-old was born in Dannevirke but grew up in Western Australia and represented Australia between 2008 and 2009.
He returned to the country of his birth to play for Wellington in 2012, which earned him a New Zealand callup in 2013. Since then he has played four tests, 85 one-day internationals and 32 T20 internationals.
He ends his international career with averages of 39.87 (test), 23.67 (ODI) and 18.89 (T20) and plans to continue to play on the international T20 circuit, as well as for Wellington and county side Leicester.
Ronchi said it was a privilege to be part of the New Zealand team at a time when it was ranking highly in all three formats.
‘‘It was a dream come true,’’ he said. ‘‘I can’t think of a better time to have been involved with New Zealand cricket. From the 2015 World Cup campaign, through to the overseas tours and some amazing games and series, it’s been a genuine highlight for me.’’
Ronchi acknowledged the role of his family.
‘‘It would also be remiss of me to not acknowledge the incredible support provided by my wife Shaan and our children Brody and Indi. Cricket takes you away from home for long periods of time, and my family have been very understanding,’’ he said.
