Rojas to return to Europe?

- FOOTBALL

After one A-League season back with Melbourne Victory, All Whites midfielder Marco Rojas is reportedly eyeing a return to Europe.

Sydney’s Daily Telegraph reports Rojas is due to return to Victory for pre-season training on Monday, having been granted extended leave after the Confederations Cup, but could travel to the Netherlands this week to expedite the move to the unnamed Dutch club.

Rojas has a year to run on his Victory contract, which means he would command a transfer fee, but his departure would cause headaches for Victory coach Kevin Muscat, the Telegraph reported.

If Rojas was to depart, the Victory would lose an All White and gain one, with Kosta Barbarouses having cut short his Wellington Phoenix contract by mutual consent to return to Melbourne.

Rojas, 25, got his A-League start with the Phoenix in 2009 before joining the Victory in 2011, the same year he made his All Whites debut.

He left the Victory at the end of the 2013 season, when his contract expired, to sign with German Bundesliga side VfB Stuttgart.

It wasn’t a entirely happy stay in Europe as he suffered injuries then was loaned out to other clubs, before returning to Melbourne last August on a two-year deal.

Rojas played in the A-League final in May against Sydney FC who won 4-2 on penalties. Rojas’ final act of the season was to have a penalty saved by another former Phoenix man, goalkeeper Danny Vukovic.
