Founders Theatre

-

In reference to the letter written by Sean Murray (November 4) in regard to Helen Kirton’s letter (November 2), it is really good that Mr Murray has given all in detail in his letter to the readers.

Founders Theatre was closed saying earthquake risk, but two years has gone by and the building is as it is. In the council budget every year there is an allocation for the maintenance and improvement to the Founders Theatre. If council had carried out this maintenance we would be still using the Theatre. If Founders Theatre building is an earthquake risk, how do you expect community groups or children s museum to be in that building.

Some respondents supported a new theatre, but not at the Hamilton Hotel site, without parking and no proper access. On November 4, three people were stabbed in Hood St, the road that leads to Knox car park building from the new theatre site.

Think of the past stadium, V8s, Claudelands – when completed all exceeded the original ‘‘cost’’. If you say Founders Theatre will cost $20.4 million to refurbish, it might end up a little more. Ratepayers will be happy with this amount rather than spending $30m on a no park, no access, new theatre building which will be owned by a trust and not by council or the ratepayers.
