Sting uncovers building site failures
Problems on construction sites discovered by an undercover sting operation have come as no surprise to one builders’ group. Operation Landing visited sites for new homes in Auckland and found qualified builders missing at four out of five venues inspected plus a range of other problems, including labour issues. The Labour Inspectorate noted that nearly all sites failing to meet employment obligations were run by Chinese companies. Thirteen sites were to have been visited by Immigration New Zealand and five people were deported. Certified Builders Association chairman Brent Chatterton was not surprised by the sting’s results, which he said were in part a function of labour shortages.
