Maguire keeps door open

-

the Australian squad to join Tonga at the World Cup, has already elected to represent the Pacific nation over New South Wales and the Kangaroos.

That won’t stop Maguire from trying open the lines of communication with Taumalolo, Sio Siua Taukeiaho, Manu Ma’u and David Fusitu’a – although he did hint that the leadership great opportunities for many players now moving forward.

‘‘We’ve got to get to know the players first. I’m not sure how it’s worked in the past, but I want to talk to those players – I want to talk to all players.

‘‘Ultimately, at the end of the day everyone’s accountable, and there’s leadership teams within groups now. The players themselves need to decide what we want to build for the jersey, because moving forward that’s the number one respect that we’ve got to have.’’

Maguire has a number of decisions to make, including whether to retain Adam Blair as captain.

But he is confident that former skipper Jesse Bromwich and Kevin Bromwich have served their punishment from last year’s Anzac Test scandal, and has no problems selecting the pair.

The 44-year-old, who will remain based in Sydney, will begin meeting with players from the Warriors over the next few days as he stays in Auckland to take in tomorrow’s game against the Roosters. In the coming weeks, he will consult the selection panel, which includes Tawera Nikau, Hugh McGahan and Mark Horo, to work through selection criteria.
