City’s central library to reopen
Hamilton book-lovers have the news they’ve been waiting for – the central library will reopen early July.
Seismic issues closed the Garden Place library in December 2016, and in September 2017 Hamilton city councillors approved a $635,000 fix.
The lengthy closure frustrated Hamilton’s avid readers, who at one point were making about 90 complaints a month. But repairs are now mostly complete and the library can reopen on July 9 – two months ahead of schedule, a council release said.
The reopening day will be all about kids, featuring a children’s entertainer and Dr Seuss story-telling.
‘‘Children and families are among our most enthusiastic supporters,’’ Hamilton City Libraries director Rebecca Whitehead said.
‘‘We’re pleased to be able to involve them directly in our reopening day events and activities.’’
Children’s entertainer Mr Roberelli will perform, and will also be filming for his new music video. Dr Seuss’ character The Cat In The Hat will be telling tales and giving away a family pass to his show at Claudelands in October.
There will also be gifts of the Hamilton City Libraries new tote bag, a new display by Hamilton City Libraries’ heritage team, and an ‘‘I Love My Library’’ story wall for customers to contribute to. However, customers won’t notice a big change in how the central library looks, Whitehead said, as repairs were in staff-only areas. The front part of the library is due for a revamp now councillors have approved $200,000 for work on the area. That is still to be arranged and is scheduled to occur in 2019/20.
Library staff are keen to get back into the flagship branch, Whitehead said. She thanked customers for their patience while the central library was closed.
‘‘We know they’ve been inconvenienced and we’re looking forward to welcoming them back and once again offering all our services,’’ she said.
The Pop-up Central Library – which has been operating while the main library was closed – will close for good on Thursday, July 5.
That means there will be no library service in central Hamilton from July 6-8.
