England collapse as India pounce

-

England lost all 10 wickets in a session as India tightened their grip on the third test in Nottingham.

The tourists, 2-0 down in the five-test series, reached 124-2 by the close yesterday with captain Virat Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara at the crease, to hold a formidable lead of 292 after two days at Trent Bridge.

After losing four first-innings wickets for six runs to be dismissed for 329 just one hour into day two, India then bowled out England for 161.

All the wickets fell in the second session, with England collapsing from 54-0 to 128-9 as allrounder Hardik Pandya took 5-28.

Openers Alastair Cook (29) and Keaton Jennings (20) both departed to catches behind with wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant going on to take five catches in the tourists’ other standout performance.

(44) and Lokesh Rahul (36) then put on 60 for the first wicket of India’s second innings before both departed. A total of 16 wickets fell in the day.

England teams went almost 80 years without losing all their wickets in a single session – between 1938 and October, 2016 – but they have now done so three times in 22 months.

The last time was at Auckland’s Eden Park five months ago when the Black Caps skittled England for 58 in 20.4 overs with the pink ball.
