Police take to jet skis

- Melanie Earley

They’ve got cars, motorbikes, a helicopter and even a tractor – now police will fight crime on the water on their new jet ski.

This Labour Weekend, the Police Maritime Unit will use it to get closer to boaties and promote advice about the importance of staying safe on the water.

The use of the jet ski was about ensuring everyone was taking the necessary safety precautions, Inspector Dave Hines, of the Police Maritime Unit, said.

‘‘It’s really easy to make sure you stay safe on the water. It’s all about being prepared, making sure you’ve done all the necessary checks on your boat and that you have the appropriate gear on board. That is lifejackets and reliable forms of communications equipment.

‘‘We also urge all boaties to ensure that you fully understand the ‘road rules’ of the water’.’’
