Auckland show class
Auckland have continued their stranglehold on the women’s interprovincial golf tournament, winning the title for the seventh time in eight years in Christchurch.
After seeing off Manawatu¯ Whanganui in the semifinals on Saturday, Auckland were unstoppable against Canterbury in the final, overcoming the hosts
4-1 to lift the trophy for the 25th time.
Carmen Lim beat Juliana Hung 3&1, Vivian Lu beat Hillary O’Connor 3&1, Miree Jung beat Catherine Bell 3/2 and Fiona Xu beat Maddie May 5&4, while Grace Jung lost to Olive Tapu
2&1 for Canterbury’s only point. Led by Lim and player of the tournament Jung, the new-look team scored a total 35 points out of a possible 40 with the latter going through the tournament unbeaten at Waitikiri Golf Club.
‘‘It’s an amazing feeling and to do it with this new team is so cool. It’s been such a fun week and I have to thank them all for that,’’ Jung said.
The day didn’t go without drama as Canterbury were taken to the wire against North Harbour in the semifinal.
Hillary O’Connor escaped with a halved match on the final hole after Anna An missed a short putt, ensuring the home team snuck through to the final.
But there was no doubting who the day belonged to as Auckland reigned supreme once again.
