Wintec told to act ‘urgently’

-

Shortcomings revealed in a damning report into spending by Wintec executives need to be addressed urgently says Education Minister Chris Hipkins.

In a statement, Hipkins said he expects Wintec to have robust policies and processes in place to ensure government funding is appropriately managed.

‘‘Audit NZ’s findings and the findings from Simon Mount QC make it quite clear that Wintec needs to urgently review its systems and policies to ensure they align with the expectations for public entities,’’ Hipkins said.

‘‘Wintec is an autonomous tertiary education institution and as such this is a matter for its council. I expect the council to make the changes necessary and continue to encourage good process and responsible behaviour.’’

National’s spokesman for tertiary education Dr Shane Reti said although auditors found no direct evidence of serious wrongdoing, it was obvious Wintec needs to improve its processes.

The tertiary provider had been given clear instructions on the actions it needs to take, he said.

‘‘I think this is a wake-up call for Wintec and a reminder for the rest of the sector that they are accountable for public money,’’ Reti said.

‘‘It looks like lazy internal processes. I take from the Wintec chairperson that they see that and they’re immediately upgrading them. Once that’s done, it probably should be reviewed in six to 12 months time to make sure these processes are in place and are suitable.’’

Reti said Wintec had to complete the changes while operating in an environment of reform. He expects the organisation to be challenged by the task ahead.

‘‘If they are to be competitive and be robust and be accountable for public money going forward, then they need to lift their game in the areas that the auditors are pointing out.’’
