Shot man was Aussie deportee

- Auckland reporters

A man shot by police in South Auckland was deported from Australia in 2017, police have confirmed.

Tangaru-Noere Turia, 34, died after being shot following an incident in Avis Ave, Papatoetoe, on Thursday night.

Police said he came out of a house with a shotgun and when he refused to drop the weapon, they opened fire.

He displayed ‘‘erratic’’ and ‘‘aggressive’’ behaviour before they fired three shots, they said.

Turia was deported back to New Zealand from Australia in 2017, police said last night.

At a press conference yesterday morning, Superintendent Jill Rogers said Turia ‘‘unexpectedly’’ came out of the house, ‘‘brandishing’’ the shotgun.

Rogers believed he was shot three times as a result of waving the shotgun at officers but said investigations into what happened were ongoing.

‘‘Tragically we are required to respond to the event as it unfolds and unfortunately this has resulted in lethal force being used.’’

Rogers said Turia had earlier fired one shot through a neighbour’s window, where several people were inside.

She said he was known to police and was on active charges.

Rogers said police had responded to reports of what sounded like gunshots in Papatoetoe on Wednesday evening but that was ‘‘unconnected’’ to Thursday’s incident.

The armed offenders squad and Eagle helicopter were called to the scene after the shot through the window was reported.

Police said officers made attempts to negotiate with Turia in order to resolve the matter safely.

At 8.24pm, Turia came out of the house with a shotgun. Police said they repeatedly asked him to drop the firearm but he failed to do so. He was then shot.

St John Ambulance staff treated him at the scene before he was transported to Middlemore Hospital where he died about 10.30pm.

A critical incident investigation into the shooting is under way and the Independent Police Conduct Authority has been notified.
