House of the Year turns its back to the street
A twin-gabled new home in Hamilton is the Waikato Master Builders Supreme House of the Year.
The house, built by Holcroft Prestige, also won the Carters New Home $1m to $1.5m category, Pink Batts Craftsmanship Award and a Gold Award.
Effectively turning its back to the street, the large house is spread across two floors. The awards judges said that while the street view makes it ‘‘somewhat mystic due to its dark and moody Coloursteel boxes’’, closer inspection reveals ‘‘a master class of vistas and detailing’’.
‘‘Prominent views over the Waikato have been achieved through clever positioning of the house, and intelligent placement of skylights ensures the home is flooded in natural light.’’
The winner of the Supreme Renovation of the Year Award was a Hamilton Lake house by JCC Build, which also won the Renovation $500,000 to $1 million category, the Carpet Mill Lifestyle Award and a Gold Award.
‘‘No part of this home has been left untouched,’’ the judges said. ‘‘It has increased in size and been completely revamped with some clever touches and details. One of the most striking features is the negative-detailed black panelled buttress and gable design. ‘‘New exterior cladding and windows have given the house a whole new look that pairs nicely with the large courtyard, pool, and garden.’’
The judges said the central living and kitchen areas open up to the front and back of the house, creating great indooroutdoor living and easy access to the pool. ‘‘Overall, this new-looking home retains friendly ties to the original dwelling.’’
The judges also praised the use of texture, colour and accessories throughout the home: ‘‘The presentation, style and class make every room in this house seem loved. Some standout features include the illuminated vanity tops, light fittings, wallpapers, and artwork – all of which add a warmth and ambience.’’
Other winners included Mason and Mason Building Contractors, which won the Kitchen Excellence Award and a Gold Award for a home in Tirau. Originally designed as a holiday home, the house on the edge of Lake Karapiro is now lived in full time. The judges praised the matte black kitchen joinery’s clean, sharp lines, and the scullery with accents of cedar and brass. ‘‘There is also a concealed bar located in the timber-slatted island.’’
