Bored chess king relinquishes crown
The Norwegian world chess champion, who has reigned over the game for the past decade, has said he will not defend his title next year because he doesn’t ‘‘particularly like it’’. Magnus Carlsen, 31, holds the record for the highest rating in chess and has won the world championships five times. In 2013 he was the first Westerner to win the global title in decades. But it appears he now feels he has no more worlds left to conquer. In a podcast yesterday, Carlsen indicated he would become the first player to walk away at the pinnacle of the game since Bobby Fischer.
