Invest in education

-

Let’s face it, operating ski fields in the face of global warming is an unviable enterprise (Saturday, November 15, PA8). Why would people want to donate towards the use of snow-making machinery — all pumping out heat when operating — instead of investing these dollars into long-term benefits for society such as for example literacy and numeracy support for under-privileged children? Nelson Mandela said: ‘‘Education is the most powerful weapon to change the world’’. Given our abysmal truancy rate, we should take heed, rather than help accelerate climate change.

Nelson’s wisdom also applies to ram-raids. Instead of supporting businesses with public funds to install bollards and other protective measures (Saturday, November 15, PA5) we will be better off in the long-term by investing in education instead.
