Supercars set to roar through Taupō streets

- Matthew Martin

Supercars fans will be able to get up close and personal with their favourite cars and drivers when all 24 entrants take part in a “Track to Town” journey through the streets of Taupō.

Drivers of all Chevrolet Camaros and Ford Mustangs taking part in the inaugural ITM Taupō Super400 will drive 8.5km in their race cars from Taupō International Motorsport Park to Roberts St Reserve at the lakefront.

The convoy will begin its circuit of the town at 3.45pm on Thursday, April 18, the day before the first official practice for the first official Supercars race weekend in Taupō.

All 24 Supercars and their drivers will remain on display during an autograph session for fans, before drivers embark on the trip back to the circuit.

The cars will drive down Broadlands Rd, turn onto Tauhara Rd, and then onto Spa Rd and Tongariro Rd, before turning onto Roberts St and will remain there until 5pm.

Supercars chief operating officer Tim Watsford encouraged fans to line the streets along the route to show their support.

“The Track to Town journey is an exciting project that brings the Supercars experience right to the heart of Taupō, and we couldn't be more thrilled to showcase our sport in such a vibrant community.

“We are sincerely grateful to the Taupō District Council for their unwavering support in making this unique event possible.

“We invite fans to join us at the live site and at vantage points along the way, as Supercars take to the streets against the breathtaking backdrop of Taupō,” Watsford said. Following Thursday night’s Track to Town and autograph session, there will be two nights of concerts at the Great Lake Centre.

Country music sensation Kaylee Bell will perform on Friday, April 19, and Kiwi legends Six60 will perform on the Saturday night.
