Tell us about your bestseller:

- Sarah Morcom

Trish Green’s customers sometimes get into a ding dong about her dub dubs, but usually that’s only when she’s low on the favourite custard treat.

Down at Morrinsville’s Wagon Wheel bakery, everything is made in-house and the pies and doughnuts attract not only tradies, but many families throughout the week.

However, it’s the bestseller known as ‘dub dubs,’ that really gets them flocking in.

“It’s hard to say. But I know our dub dubs are really popular. People come through saying a friend has told them to come and try our ‘ding dongs’ or ‘dong dong’, and I’m like, okay, I know what you mean! It has custard and cream inside, I feel like I could easily eat them, like popcorn.

“People have really taken to them. Our pies are also a big winner.”

Why do you think it's so appealing?

“I tell people, they’re made with love. I’ve seen other places try to make them, and they don’t taste the same. And I tell people, there’s one secret ingredient. They’re made with love! And that’s the only thing I can think of because you should be able to make these easily. But people can’t. I think we have the magic touch.”

Who's attracted to it?

“We have a lot of tradies, for sure. But we’ve also seen a lot of families, especially in long weekends.”

How much is it?

“These are $2 each. We do get complaints that some stuff is too expensive, and I get that, but then I go to Hamilton and I’m like ‘woah!’ So I don’t feel too guilty.

“We try to not put our prices up too often. People are quite understanding, though

What's your favourite item?

“Basically I start from one end of the bakery, and I move myself around. Truth be told, the mince and cheese pies are my things. I also love the fruit doughnuts. There’s apple, blueberry, banana – so good.”
