-

Demolition of the Cambridge pool buildings is underway following a formal site blessing held yesterday morning.

The blessing was led by local kauma¯ tua Taiapa Kara and Waipa¯ Mayor Jim Mylchreest.

During the formalities, Peter Knox from the Cambridge Lions presented Mayor Mylchreest with a cheque for the remaining $50,000 of their $100,000 donation.

Project manager Lorraine Kendrick said the demolition started today and will take four weeks to complete.

“Today marked a big milestone for the project and it’s all go from here.,” she said.

“Demolition is getting underway, at the end of the month we’ll begin the water, wastewater and stormwater upgrades, followed by earthworks for the building foundation towards the end of June.

“By the end of July people will start to see construction work on the actual building begin — and that’s when it will start to look really exciting.”

The project has been supported by a number of local businesses and families, with donations reaching $1.395 million.

Naylor Love construction has been awarded the contract to build the pool complex which will reopen at the end of 2019.

Waipa¯ District Council approved the concept plans in 2017 for an upgrade of the existing outdoor pool, a new 10-lane indoor pool and learner’s pool, a hydrotherapy pool, spa and sauna and a children’s splash pad.

There will be increased seating and a community room as well as car-parking, landscaping and an upgrade of Williamson Street.
