Facelift for Kihikihi Club

-

When a long serving member of Kihikihi Bowling Club made a contribution towards upgrading the kitchen, it set off a chain reaction to update the interior of the club rooms.

Club stalwart Rex McGill says with the exception of laying of floor coverings, club members pooled their resources and enthusiasm to complete the tasks.

“Once the old kitchen was dismantled, removed and the new fittings installed and the area redecorated, that highlighted the need to replace the curtains,” he said. “The ladies responded and in a flash it was out with the old and in with the new.”

The women then decided the leftover vinyl from the kitchen floor could be used in the toilets and it could also do with fresh paint, a fix of the wash area and cabinets.

“That all looked great but the walls in the main area need painting,” said McGill. “The Colour Committee made the decision and in no time volunteers with brushes, sandpaper, ladders and anything else that was required, ensured the paint was not going to stay in the tins for long. The only thing slowing it down was the colder weather.”

Small repair jobs around windows and doors were also attended to. As the women’s toilets had a face lift, the mens’ also got a freshen-up.

Now the bar area and the ceiling really could not be left untouched.

Meanwhile, renovation work was being undertaken on the greens which had come under pressure in the latter half of last season.

McGill said the greens have been resoiled, levelled, strategic sowing, edging and drainage.

Almost all club members have been involved in part of the total process, including providing food and refreshments for the volunteers.

“It proved what excellent results can be achieved with the members’ hidden talents and teamwork. It also enhanced the camaraderie within the club,” he said.

So all is in place for the new season when the club will be a brighter place able to better cater for old and new members, visitors from other clubs, those who enjoy twilight bowls, those who hold meetings and functions at the venue and anyone who just drops in to have a look and a chat. All are always welcome.
