Free bus for residents
Cambridge residents can climb aboard a free bus to Te Awamutu this summer, thanks to Waipa¯ District Council.
Council is putting on the service at a cost of $9000 to encourage Cambridge residents to use the Livingstone Aquatic Centre.
Cambridge’s public pool is currently closed for major redevelopment, on track to open by the end of 2019.
Starting yesterday, Cambridge residents can catch a bus three days a week to and from the Te Awamutu pool.
A 22-seater bus will leave from Cambridge i-Site at 8.30am and 12.30pm each Monday, Wednesday and Friday and travel to the Te Awamutu i-Site.
The bus will return at 11.30am and 4.30pm.
Seats will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.
The service will not run over the Christmas and New Year period, resuming again on Monday, January 7.
Waipa¯ District Council service delivery group manager Barry Bergin says the free service would finish on Friday, January 18.
“If it proves popular, and there’s ongoing demand, we may consider extending it for a bit longer.
“This is a first for council so let’s see how it goes.”
Barry hoped those bussing to Te Awamutu would also take the opportunity to visit the Pioneer Park playground, library and rose gardens.
The bus service would be funded from the Cambridge pool operational budget.
