Chopper prize for classic

-

Waipa¯’s number one cycling supporter could take to the skies in January to cheer on riders in the international New Zealand Cycle Classic.

The world-class race, sponsored by Grassroots Trust, will have over 120 riders racing around the Waipa¯ district from 23-27 January.

To showcase the district and thank supporters, a champion supporter’s prize pack is on offer. It includes a 30-minute scenic helicopter ride for four people from local company Helicorp.

The winner will also get reserved viewing spots at the finish line, a VIP tent for up to 12 people at the closing party and complimentary food and drinks throughout the day on Sunday, January 27.

Waipa¯ mayor Jim Mylchreest said while the district often celebrates Waipa¯’s champion athletes and sportspeople, champion supporters were just as important.

“Events like this attract a huge range of people, both locals and visitors,” he said.

“We want to celebrate our fantastic local supporters who not only welcome the visitors to Waipa¯ with open arms, but also get behind our athletes and support them every day.”

As a key supporter of the race, Waipa¯ District Council is providing a range of activities and spot prizes for supporters throughout the week to encourage them to stay longer in the district and enjoy all it has to offer.

There will be free activities for supporters at the finish lines of the final three stages, including a Party in the Park on Sunday, January 27.

The party will be held at Cambridge’s Victoria Square from 12.30-5pm.

“We’re looking forward to welcoming the Three Peaks Ride New Zealand’s Cycling Festival and Grassroots Trust New Zealand Cycle Classic to Waipa¯ and encourage the community to get along to some of the races and other events planned during the week.”

The competition to win the prize pack, including the helicopter ride, will be run via Council’s Facebook page.

Entries close on Friday, January 18.

Full terms and conditions for the prize are available on council’s website.
