Siblings Sam and Gemma Towers (Te Awamutu) and Ben Ambler and Suwanne McPhee (Cambridge) were members of the triumphant Waikato Junior Golfing Society’s Booth Shield team that travelled to Gisborne.

As well as winning the Booth Shield, Waikato’s young guns also took out the Weber Shield.

Scoring for the Booth Shield is the best three nett scores (boys and girls) counting per team, per round.

After the first round Waikato had a score of 433, one shot behind Wellington.

The second round not only counts for the Booth Shield but also the Weber Shield is played for, with the average nett score for the entire team counting.

Waikato won the Weber Shield with an average nett score of 70.3.

Going into the last round, Waikato had a 22-shot lead over Wellington.

A solid team effort enabled Waikato to claim the Booth Shield by 13 shots from Wellington.

“The Booth Shield tournament is not only about the golf but also the social development of the players.

“Over the weekend, our 10 individual players developed into a tight team unit supporting each other both on and off the golf course.

“Sam and Gemma, and Ben and Suwanne certainly played their part in that happening.”

Galbraith said both the Te Awamutu and Cambridge golf clubs can be very proud of how these young players represented themselves over the weekend. The first Booth Shield was played in Gisborne in 1960, making this year the 58th tournament.

The Waikato Junior Golfing Society was also formed in 1960 and has competed at every tournament.

Waikato is one of the most successful societies in the Booth Shield history, last winning it in 2013, 2014 and 2015.

Waikato last hosted the Booth Shield in 2016 at Riverside Golf Club.

The Booth Shield 2019 is to be played in the Waikato and will be hosted at the Te Awamutu Golf Club.
