Waipa riders to fore

Waipa Post - - Crimeline -

Five BMX riders from the Waipa¯ district have made the newly established National Youth Development Squad.

Leila Walker, Jack Greenough, Logan Hall, Maui Morrison (Cambridge) and Brooke Penny (Te Awamutu) gained selection after impressing at the trials held in conjunction with the Central Regional Championships in Taupo¯ .

The trials were to select four girls and four boys from the UCI 13 and UCI 14 age groups.

Elliot Kale (Tauranga) and Megan Williams (Rotorua) also made the girls’ squad, while Karepa Heke (Tauranga) makes up the boys’ squad.

Those selected gain knowledge and experience from passionate coaches, then travel away as a squad to Australia without parents and family to ride as an independent athlete.

This is intended as a first step in preparing BMXNZ’s younger riders to ride internationally at more senior levels by providing life experiences in travelling and competing independently.
