Record breaking from squad

-

Mike Smith’s nine-strong Team Trainstation squad excelled at the ILPNZ record breakers powerlifting event in Hamilton.

Smith was first masters and first under 90kg, setting New Zealand records in masters on both the bench press and deadlift.

“To say I’m happy with now having ownership of New Zealand titles in bodybuilding and powerlifting is an understatement,” Smith said.

“I owe the team for this. They are our titles.”

The experienced Jamahl Beatie also set a personal best, a 300kg deadlift.

The team included seven novices, Paula Johnstone, Ashleigh Wells, mother and daughter Michelle Kingston-White and Sinead Kingston White, Lisa Murray, Ollie Denning and Brent Ramage.

Three of them took away titles, Michelle Kingston-White winning women’s novice raw, Wells taking out women’s novice classic raw and Denning winning novice men’s two lift.

“Besides incredible placings throughout the day for our team, the biggest reward was the connection of the team and the support we have,” Smith said.

“Our crowd support was immense with fans travelling from the Bay and Auckland.”

Waipa¯ smallbore shooters Abby Pierce, Cole Haden, Liam McDonald and Samuel Wilde played a key role in the 12-strong North Island Under 21 team beating their South Island counterparts in Lower Hutt.

All the quartet shot impressively in the premier event in Target Shooting NZ’s calendar, contributing to the North Island winning score of 3900.180. The South Island score was 3869.159.

Haden shot particularly well. His score of 393.18, including a 100, was third highest in the North Island team. It would have placed him 11th out of 15 in the North Island men’s team.

The other Waipa¯ shooters were hard on his tail, Pierce posting a score of 392.19, McDonald 390.17 and Wilde 388.11.

Pierce, Haden and McDonald were rewarded by being named in the New Zealand Juniors team to compete the following day in an international postal shot match with the UK Home counties. Pierce was on fire shooting 297 out of 300, Haden 295 and McDonald 290.

The UK results will not be known for several weeks.

The New Zealand juniors is an under 21 team, making the Waipa¯ trio eligible for selection for another five or six years. (Discount applicable to the price of the refilled items only)
